Dr. Kelly Garner
Artist Development Specialist
A graduate of Miami with a D.M.A. in Jazz performance and Six-time Downbeat Award winner, Dr. Kelly K. Garner is Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Commercial Music at Union University in Jackson, TN. Dr. Garner previously spent ten years on the Commercial Voice faculty at Belmont University.
Dr. Garner has spent 30 years in Nashville as a recording artist, staffwriter, publisher, arranger, studio owner, producer, educator, and author. She is a Dove nominee, BMI Award recipient, and received two RIAA Gold Records for background vocals. Her six Downbeat Awards were won while in Miami for Graduate Jazz Vocal Soloist, Graduate Blues/Pop Rock Soloist, Graduate Jazz Arrangement, and three for Jazz Ensemble. She regularly appears as a clinician at the Jazz Education Network, one clinic in Atlanta 2013, two clinics in Louisville 2016, and one clinic in Reno 2019. Dr. Garner is the author of the Jazz Education Network Article for JazzEd Magazine, “Recording Tips & Tricks: Microphones & Placement,” published in 2015. In 2016, she wrote a book for Rowman/Littlefield Publications regarding commercial vocal style and in 2018, was asked to contribute to "The Voice Teachers Cookbook” published by Meredith Music Publications. She has since been asked to be the arranger for a choral book released by Brentwood-Benson Publications/Capital-CMG in 2018 and was as previously asked to write an article for Voice Council magazine in 2014. She owns and operates Big Dog Studios (bigdogstudios.net) & Yellow Tree Music Group (yellowtreemusicgroup.com).
While singing back-up in Nashville, she worked for: Marie Osmond, Ray Stevens, George Benson, Gloria Estefan, Steve Miller Band, Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael W. Smith. Kelly recorded or edited vocals for the following artists: Sunny Wilkinson, New York Voices, Mountain Heart, Avalon, Broken Wire, High Road, Kate Reid, Cindy Morgan, FFH, The Specks, The Booth Brothers, and Legacy Five to name a few.
